Hi everyone! My name is Jamie and I'm from Oklahoma. I ran onto a story about WUCN on our local news station. The WUCN mission really resonated with me. My life dramatically changed when someone took the time show me how to build, repair, and maintain the things in my house. I now know the value in it.
Growing up my family didn't have a lot. My mom did the best she could with what she had. Growing up in low income apartments there's not a lot of maintenance. You learn to just deal with certain things. As I grew older I grew tired of dealing with those things that were in need of repair. I wanted to learn.
It wasn't until I met my now husband in 2004 that I would finally get my chance to do just that. I would get to learn! My father in law, Robert, can build/repair anything. I mean anything! With my eagerness to learn and his willingness to teach we set out on what has now been a 16 year journey that has brought so much joy and pride to my life. We have remodeled 2 homes (which sold for a profit) and are now building a new 900sqf suite on to our family home.
I can't express how much it means to me to be able to put work into my home. The home that will one day belong to our daughter. I am getting to show her what it means to put your hands on things in your life and build them up! I am proud that at the end of the day when she sees me covered in sweat, paint, and saw dust. While I get joy from my projects, I do this for her. I hope to inspire her to take control of all the things in her life. I aim to teach her what I know and hope that one day she can teach others.
I plan to document our new build. I would love to share the progress as it is made with all of you.
Thanks for reading!
